CER’s Innovative Ticketing Roadmap

CER: Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies

The CER is an association of European railway companies dedicated to making train travel across Europe easier, faster, and more enjoyable. One of its key initiatives is the CER Ticketing Roadmap, which is a series of improvements that have been in development since 2021 to help ensure that your journey runs smoothly.

How will this improve your experience as a train passenger?

1. Booking further in advance

In the past, it was difficult to book international train tickets well in advance, as most operators only allowed bookings up to three months ahead of time. Now, however, most CER members allow you to book and reserve tickets as early as six to twelve months before departure. This is ideal for those who like to plan their journeys well ahead of time.

2. Uniform luggage rules

There is no more hassle with different rules in each country. For CER members, the new rule is that you can take as much luggage as you can carry in one go. Dangerous or prohibited items are still prohibited, of course.

3. Clearly defined rules for pets

Are you travelling with your pet? The rules are now consistent across most CER member countries. This means you will know exactly what to expect when crossing the border with your pet.

4. Free travel for carers and assistance dogs

Passengers with reduced mobility who hold a public transport carer card may request a free ticket for their carer or assistance dog. Within Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, no separate ticket is required and carers may travel free of charge upon presentation of the card.

5. Missing a connection

What should you do if you miss your international train because of a delay? Thanks to the Agreement on Journey Continuation (AJC), you can continue your journey free of charge on the next available train operated by the same company. This applies provided you allowed sufficient time for your connection. The CER played a key role in establishing this agreement.

6. Passenger rights in the event of disruption

If your journey is delayed or cancelled, you are entitled to compensation or a refund, depending on the circumstances. The rules are now easier to understand and consistent across different countries.

As of when can I book train tickets?

You can book train tickets between 4 to 12 months before the departure date. The period varies by carrier.

    Why can't I book earlier?

If I book my holiday accommodation a year in advance, I can't buy the train tickets yet. Why is that?
