The Zimmer Tower

The Zimmer Tower is a prominent landmark in Lier. It was originally part of the medieval city walls. The tower got its current name and function in the 1930s, when the Belgian clockmaker and astronomer Louis Zimmer installed an astronomical clock in it. This complex timepiece not only shows the time, but also astronomical information such as the position of the sun and moon.

Lunch at Zuster Agnes

Then it's time for a delicious lunch. Take a seat on Zuster Agnes' terrace and enjoy a hot lunch, a sandwich or ribs and fries for the kids.

After lunch, visit the must-see Begijnhof. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the city's most picturesque spots with its narrow streets and cute little houses.

Lier by water

A unique way to experience Lier is from the water. Board an authentic barge (palingschuit) for a cruise on the Binnennete. Cruise past beautiful cityscapes and keep an eye out for the legendary Bootvisser.

After breakfast, begin your day with an active cycle ride. The 50-kilometre route takes you along the Grote and Kleine Nete, past historic farms and castles, through the Kesselse Heath and into the quietest village in Flanders.

To Lier by train

    Are you going for a day or weekend to Lier? Travel to Lier in comfort by taking the train.
    Taking Eurocity Direct or EuroCity? Then you will travel to Antwerp and catch a train to Lier from there. The travel time from Amsterdam is 1.59 hours, and the starting price is € 27 for a one-way, adult ticket with Eurocity Direct. You can book your tickets up to 180 days in advance. It may be cheaper to travel on the EuroCity. This train runs between Rotterdam and Brussels. Book your ticket early as the availability of the lowest Saver fare is limited.
    You can also take the Eurostar to Antwerp where you can catch a train to Lier.
