Passengers with impaired mobility

Even if you have limited mobility, you can still travel by international train comfortably and safely. NS International offers a range of facilities for passengers with physical, visual, hearing or intellectual impairments. This page contains all the general information you need. Further on, you can read exactly what is possible and what conditions apply with each train carrier.

Accessibility for all

We offer a range of services to improve accessibility for elderly people, wheelchair users, passengers with visual or hearing impairments, and other passengers with impairements. These include designated wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets, as well as space for mobility aids. Passengers are also permitted to bring a companion or assistance dog. However, assistive devices with combustion engines are not permitted on any international trains.

Travelling with a wheelchair or mobility scooter

International trains have designated spaces for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The exact dimensions and maximum weights permitted vary from train to train. A folded wheelchair is considered regular luggage and must comply with luggage regulations. Electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters are permitted within the specified dimensions and weight limits. Further down the page, you will find the dimensions and number of wheelchair spaces available for each carrier.

Taking other aids on international trains

Many aids can be taken on international trains, such as rollators, walking frames and folding wheelchairs. However, medical aids such as oxygen cylinders or large quantities of medication often require a doctor's certificate. You can read below which aids are permitted and under what conditions for each train carrier.

Travelling with a companion or assistance dog

Passengers with a disability can often bring a companion and/or assistance dog with them. If they have a Dutch OV-begeleiderskaart or EU Disability Card, their companion can often travel for free with many train operators. Assistance dogs almost always travel for free. In some cases, however, an accompanying person fare must be booked, or the animal must be registered in advance. The exact rules for each train operator are listed below.

Travelling with a visual impairment

Are you travelling with a visual impairment and a guide or assistance dog? Most international carriers allow assistance dogs to travel free of charge. Sometimes the animal must be registered, or additional rules may apply. On this page, you can read what you need to arrange with each carrier.

Assistance with boarding and disembarking

Do you require assistance with boarding and disembarking? If so, you can request NS Travel Assistance.

  • You can make requests by telephone on 030 – 235 78 22, which is available 24/7.
  • Please note that assistance must be requested well in advance. In most cases, this means at least 24 hours before departure, and sometimes 36 hours for journeys to Germany.
  • Availability varies outside the Netherlands. For some countries, we recommend requesting assistance at least one week in advance.

Travellers with hearing impairments can submit their request for assistance via WhatsApp or social media channels indienen.

Assistance outside the Netherlands

If you are travelling through several countries — for example, from Germany to the Czech Republic — different rules apply to each railway company. The Interrail webpage 'Travelling with reduced mobility' provides an overview of each country, including instructions and contact details.
