This modern city, with its small historic quarter, is bursting with festivals. In summer, the Machsee fest is a free festival with live music and good food by Lake Machsee. There are also spectacular fireworks shows in the summer months. The best fireworks experts compete in teams in the baroque Herrenhäuser garden.
The garden is also lovely to visit when there aren’t any shows. In winter, there’s a Christmas market in the old town.
