NS and Deutsche Bahn: daily direct train to Munich from 2025

April 12, 2024

NS and Deutsche Bahn (DB) want to run a daily direct ICE train from Amsterdam to Munich starting in 2025. The rail companies see passenger demand to Germany's third largest city growing in the coming years. The train will run via Utrecht, Arnhem, Frankfurt Airport and Stuttgart, largely using Germany's high-speed network. The new connection replaces the current direct connection to Basel. Travelers to Basel can use the direct overnight train or travel during the day via a change in Mannheim.

Munich is an important hub for onward train travel to the Alps and southern Europe. The new direct connection will have a travel time of about 7 hours. About 30 minutes faster than the current connection with a connection change. The train will depart from Amsterdam Centraal every morning and travel to Germany via Utrecht and Arnhem.

The fastest connection to Basel - with the change to Mannheim - will keep approximately the same travel time of about 6.30 hours. This train from Mannheim also continues to Zurich. The final decision on the new connection to Munich depends on the distribution of capacity by the network operators in Germany and the Netherlands, which takes place in August.

Due to long-term work in southern Germany, no train traffic will be possible between Frankfurt and Basel starting this summer. Therefore, the last direct ICE train to Basel will depart from Amsterdam on July 15, 2024.
