The Christmas markets in London

Dozens of Christmas markets take place in and around London every year. Most Christmas markets are open from mid-November until the first week of January (subject to change).

1. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, London's most enjoyable free Christmas market, lasts for six weeks and takes place from the third week of November to the first week of January. You absolutely must not miss Hyde Park during your visit to London at Christmas. Besides endless nativity scenes, you can also go ice skating, play funfair games and admire London from above on the Ferris wheel. Of course, there is also plenty to eat and drink. 2. Southbank Center Winter Market

Besides Winter Wonderland, there are even more entertaining markets in London at Christmas. The South Bank will also be transformed into a winter paradise full of fun activities.

A key part of the Southbank Centre's Winter festival is the Winter Market. Here you can wander past wooden stalls full of warm drinks and delicious snacks. Naturally, the stalls are all decorated in Christmas style.

3. Leicester Square Christmas Market

If you are going to London by train at Christmas then do not skip the Leicester Square Christmas Market. Leicester Square is undoubtedly one of London's most famous squares, and at Christmas it is transformed into a vibrant Christmas market. What else can you do in London at Christmas time?

Besides Christmas markets, there are plenty of other attractions to visit when you are in London at Christmas.

  1. The lighting of the Regent Street Christmas lights and the lights in the huge Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square are festivities not to be missed. Also be sure to admire the Christmas lights on Carnaby Street. Each year, the decorations have a different theme and the lights are a true work of art.
  2. If you enjoy going to a ballet performance, the annual performance of the English National Ballet is a must see. True to tradition, they give a number of performances of the Nutcracker at the London Coliseum.
  3. Do you like to shop at a discount? Then make sure you are in London on Boxing Day. In England, they call this day Boxing Day and traditionally the British go shopping then. The big winter sales start on Boxing Day so expect lots of discounts and bustling crowds.
