In 2019 more passengers took the train abroad

In 2019, 4 million passengers took the train to a destination across the border. The number of international train tickets sold grew by 13% compared to the previous year. The strongest riser is Marne-la-Vallée station, which is located at the gates of Disneyland Paris.

Also growth for destinations further away

The growth in destinations further away is also striking, such as Bordeaux (+61%), Milan (+56%) and Lyon (+47%). Heike Luiten, director of NS International: "Our main focus remains to get passengers off the plane and onto the train for destinations less than 700 kilometres away. But travelling longer distances also needs to become more attractive, with simpler booking and lower fares for travellers. ”

Year filled with milestones

Luiten: "In 2020, we expect another year filled with milestones for the international train. The direct Eurostar between Amsterdam and London will hopefully start this spring; after which we want to add a fourth daily connection. We would then be offering 1.3 million passengers the choice to take the train to London every year.

Also, by the end of the year, the Netherlands will once again be connected to the European network of night trains, with a night train to Munich, Innsbruck and Vienna every night."
